About Reversi

Reversi is the classic strategy board game of flipping discs. Place a disc so that it traps a line of your opponent's discs between two of yours, and they all flip to your color. When the board is full, the player with more discs wins. Play the computer on Easy, Medium or Hard, or play a friend on the same device.

How to play Reversi

  1. Black moves first. The board starts with two black and two white discs in the center.
  2. Place a disc so that one or more straight lines of your opponent's discs sit between it and another of your discs.
  3. All the trapped discs flip to your color, in every direction at once.
  4. If you can't flip anything, your turn is skipped. When neither player can move, the one with the most discs wins.

Tips and tricks

  • Corners can never be flipped back, so they're the most valuable squares on the board.
  • Avoid the squares right next to an empty corner: they often hand the corner to your opponent.
  • Early on, flipping fewer discs is usually better. It leaves your opponent with fewer good moves.
  • Try to keep more moves available for yourself than for your opponent (mobility).

Reversi FAQ

Is Reversi free to play?

Yes. Reversi is free in your browser on desktop, tablet and phone, with no download or sign-up.

Is Reversi the same as Othello?

Othello is a trademarked version of Reversi with the same rules and the same starting position used here. This game isn't affiliated with the Othello brand.

How strong is the computer?

Easy makes mistakes on purpose, Medium looks three moves ahead, and Hard searches as deep as it can in under a second and plays the final moves perfectly.

Can two people play Reversi on one device?

Yes. Choose 2 Players and take turns on the same screen.

What happens if I have no legal move?

You pass and your opponent plays again. The game ends when neither player can move, usually when the board is full.
